Kern Place's Busiest Fall Nights Depend on Your Block and the Day of the Week

October 22, 2026

Dusk view of a brick home's sheltered wooden front door, clay tile roof, concrete steps and sculptural desert planting.

"If I am not at home an hour or two before the event, I don't have a place to park, and I've had to go as much as four blocks away carrying groceries." That's what a Kern Place resident told KTSM about the Coldplay concert, in a story that ran before BTS played UTEP on May 2 and 3, 2026.

Between October 23 and November 7, there are a lot of nights like that. How each one goes for you depends on which side of the decal line your street sits on and what day of the week the event falls on. Those two things matter more than the name on the marquee.

The decal line runs through the neighborhood

KTSM's May 2026 reporting explains how the parking pressure is split up. Most streets that run parallel to the Don Haskins Center and just south of it require resident parking decals, so many of those neighbors are largely unaffected. Streets directly across from the arena and farther north have no decal rules, and that's where event parking ends up.

The resident from the opening put it plainly: drivers see the decal sign, keep going, and stop on the next street that has no restriction. "So naturally, we're next to the decal streets," he told KTSM. He said he hopes decals will eventually be required on every street directly across from the university.

So two houses a few blocks apart can have very different concert nights. If your block is covered, the crowd mostly goes past. If it isn't, the crowd parks in front of your house.

The City of El Paso handles residential parking permits through Planning & Inspections' One Stop Shop at 811 Texas Ave., (915) 212-0104. The city's Residential Parking Permit Application asks for resident and vehicle details. Staff then check your address, photo ID, citation history, and zone and color assignment. The form also says tenants aren't issued resident permits under an owner's permit, and permits must be returned when they expire or when eligibility ends. For whether your street is in a zone and what it costs, call the One Stop Shop directly. This is general information, not legal advice, and the city has the final word on eligibility.

The streetcar covers most of these nights, but not every one

If your street is one where the car has to stay put on event nights, the free El Paso Streetcar is the other piece. Sun Metro runs it on a 4.8-mile loop with 27 stops linking Downtown, including the Convention Center and Arts District, with Uptown, UTEP and the Cincinnati entertainment area. Rides cost nothing, and cars come about every 15 minutes, with occasional delays in heavy traffic.

The catch is the schedule. Sun Metro's published hours are:

  • Monday through Thursday: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Friday: 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Saturday: noon to 11 p.m.
  • Sunday: noon to 6 p.m.

Sun Metro's September 2026 service changes, which took effect September 20, covered bus routes and Montana Brio. The streetcar wasn't on the list.

Here's how those hours line up with the rest of the season, starting Friday, October 23:

Date Event Where Streetcar's regular hours that day
Fri, Oct 23 Mon Laferte Don Haskins Center Until 11 p.m.
Fri, Oct 23 Día de los Muertos, 5 to 9 p.m. 1 Civic Center Plaza Until 11 p.m.
Sat, Oct 24 Día de los Muertos Desfile, 4 p.m. start Downtown, Campbell and Mills Noon to 11 p.m.
Sat, Oct 24 Día de los Muertos, 2 to 10 p.m. 1 Civic Center Plaza Noon to 11 p.m.
Sun, Oct 25 Don Omar Don Haskins Center Noon to 6 p.m.
Fri, Oct 30 Día de los Muertos, 5 to 9 p.m. 1 Civic Center Plaza Until 11 p.m.
Sat, Oct 31 Plim Plim – En Vivo! Magoffin Auditorium Noon to 11 p.m.
Sat, Oct 31 Día de los Muertos, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 1 Civic Center Plaza Noon to 11 p.m.
Sun, Nov 1 Día de los Muertos, 2 to 7 p.m. 1 Civic Center Plaza Noon to 6 p.m.
Fri, Nov 6 Morrissey Don Haskins Center Until 11 p.m.
Sat, Nov 7 UTEP vs. Hawai'i, kickoff TBA Sun Bowl Noon to 11 p.m.

The Friday and Saturday nights are the easy ones. Mon Laferte, Morrissey and the Hawai'i game all fall on days when the streetcar runs until 11 p.m. UTEP lists the Hawai'i kickoff as TBA on its 2026 football schedule, so the streetcar question for November 7 has to wait on that time.

On Saturday, October 24, the big crowds are downtown. The Mexican American Cultural Center's Día de los Muertos Desfile & Festival starts at 4 p.m. at Campbell Street and Mills Avenue. It heads north on Mesa Street, turns west on Franklin Avenue, and ends near Santa Fe Street. On the same afternoon and evening, Visit El Paso's first Día de los Muertos celebration runs from 2 to 10 p.m. at the Downtown Visitor Information Center and Pedestrian Pathway. This second weekend is themed "Stars Remembered," a tribute to artists, entertainers and cultural icons, and every activity is free. With the streetcar running until 11 p.m. that Saturday, you can do the whole evening downtown without moving your car.

Sunday, October 25, is the night to plan around

Don Omar's show at the Don Haskins Center falls on a Sunday. The streetcar's regular Sunday service ends at 6 p.m. Sun Metro notes that it occasionally extends hours for special events, so check its streetcar page closer to the date. On the published schedule, though, the free ride home isn't there for a Sunday-night concert.

The same gap shows up a week later. The last Día de los Muertos day downtown, "Always with Us" on Sunday, November 1, runs from 2 to 7 p.m. That's an hour past the streetcar's regular Sunday cutoff. An early-afternoon visit fits the streetcar schedule. Staying until closing means another way home.

On streets without decals, this changes the math. On Fridays and Saturdays the streetcar takes some drivers out of the picture. On a Sunday, more of the crowd arrives by car and looks for a place to leave it.

When cars do come, here's where UTEP sends them

UTEP's own event parking doesn't absorb everyone, but knowing how it works tells you what visitors are weighing before they turn onto a side street.

Glory Road Parking Garage, 100 E. Glory Road. Sun Metro operates this public Park+Ride, not UTEP. Special-event rates are $20 for concerts, $15 for evening events and $10 for daytime events. On ordinary days it's $1 an hour with a $15 daily maximum. Payment is credit card only, and monthly or annual passes can't be used during special events. The Sun Metro brochure puts the garage across from a streetcar stop, with public parking 24 hours a day.

Football lots. For the Hawai'i game, UTEP Athletics' gameday page lists single-game parking at $25 in DA1, SB2, SB3, SB7, SB8 and the Sun Bowl Garage. The Goldmine Collective sells these spots on game day only, by credit card at each lot entrance. Free parking is available on the south side of campus in SC1 through SC4, RI4 and the Schuster Garage, and on the north side in SB10 off Sun Bowl Drive. Outer lots open at 8 a.m. and inner campus lots at noon. Paydirt Pete's Pregame Party Zone moves to Glory Field this season and opens three hours before kickoff.

Campus meters. UTEP's visitor meters have a two-hour maximum and are enforced weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., at $5 for the first hour and $2 for each additional hour, capped at $13 a day.

Drivers weigh a $20 garage or a $25 lot against a free curb on a street with no decal sign.

Eating on Cincinnati before doors open

The restaurants nearest the arena deal with the same squeeze, and how they handle it can shape where you eat on a show night.

The Pizza Joint sits directly across from the Don Haskins Center. An employee told KTSM that towing is enforced in its private lots. The front lot still fills during big events, and the back lot is held more tightly because employees and neighboring shops use it. Before the BTS weekend, the crew planned to come in early to secure parking and prep extra food for the pre-concert rush.

Kaedama, a Japanese ramen spot a couple of blocks farther south, has no parking lot of its own. A manager told KTSM that concertgoers take up the meters, so customers park down the street and walk up. If you live within walking distance, that's an easy early dinner on show night.

Ardovino's Pizza, 206 Cincinnati Ave., serves signature pizzas, salads and deli sandwiches. The El Paso Times roundup of September 2026 health inspections lists it with a score of 97 from a September 14 inspection.

Crave Kitchen & Bar, 300 Cincinnati Ave., serves Modern American food from breakfast and brunch through dinner, along with drinks and takeout. On Halloween, when Plim Plim plays Magoffin Auditorium, that range of hours gives families options on either side of the show.

El Camino is the newest name on the list. Texas Monthly reviewed it in July 2026 as a retro-cool seafood restaurant in Kern Place from the owners of Casa Pantera in Five Points. The review highlighted the promise of seafood flown in daily, a New England lobster roll on brioche with brown-butter mayo, and a cocktail called La Sirena made with Cazadores cristalino tequila, Aperol and a passion fruit, grapefruit and peach base. It's a sit-down dinner, so it fits better on a night with no show than on a night you're trying to make doors.

If you're thinking about how a block's decal status, its distance from the Don Haskins Center, or its walk to a streetcar stop affects daily life on a particular Kern Place street, the team at Center Real Estate is glad to talk it through, in English or Spanish, before you make any decision.
